三、阅读理解
A bird’s feather coat is made up of many different kinds of feathers. Each has a different function (功能).
●Head Feathers Head feathers come in all sizes. Tiny ones grow in overlapping (交叠的) rows to make a silky covering for a bird’s head. ●Primary Flight Feathers The outer wing feathers are long and strong. They are usually wider on one side. Their job is to push air as birds fly. ●Secondary Flight Feathers A row of smaller feathers grow on the bottom of the wing closer to the body. These also push air, so birds can fly. ●Tail Feathers Tail feathers help birds fly forward and stop during their flight. ●Down Feathers Down feathers grow under the other feathers. They are light and soft. Their job is to keep birds warm. |
◆Flight Feathers push down on the air, so birds can fly. Feathers can move, so birds can change the shape of their wings. And feathers are light, so they don’t add too much weight. ◆Social Media Birds’ feathers tell the world who they are. Eye-catching feathers are good for attracting mates. ◆Protection Feathers of different colors and shapes act like camouflage (保护色), hiding birds from enemies. And often when an enemy tries to catch a bird, all it gets is a mouthful of tail feathers. ◆Keeping warm and cool Down feathers stop heat from getting in or out. This helps the bird stay just the right temperature. Feathers are so good at catching heat that penguins can stay warm even when standing on the ice sheet at 40 below zero. |

I have lived in China for six years, but still think the country is mysterious. So I made up my mind to go on a 3-month cycling journey to discover more.
My cycling journey was very safe in China because I never had a moment in which I felt I was in danger. Wherever I went, there was always phone signal, and even WeChat pay.
The beauty of nature was also fantastic. It simply took my breath away when I cycled on the way. With thick forests, blue lakes and green hills, there was so much to see.
The food was another highlight of my journey. I got to taste local food in every place I went. My favourite was the spicy food in Sichuan. No matter how much I ate, I never got sick of having different Chinese foods. There were so many different choices.
In addition, cycling in China cost less than I thought. I could even save some money during the trip to support a local charity.
The best part was about people. I met people from different ethnic minorities (少数民族) across China and I was even invited to attend a wedding by Tibetan girls. The wedding was amazing, full of dancing, laughter and fun. One time I me t a group of Chinese men who were also travelling, but by motorcycle. They invited me to stay with them in the mountains. We cooked fish that we caught from the lake together. It felt like true freedom from the busy feeling of daily life. Another example was impressive. When I met a group of cyclists in their 60s, they cycled better than me. It really encouraged me to push myself and go farther every day. Also, an experienced cyclist saved me when I got a flat tire (爆胎). He helped fix my tire.
By the end of my journey, I wanted to keep going. I felt like I could do it forever. It was truly an experience I will never forget. If anyone wants to explore in China, I would highly recommend going by bicycle.

The School Activity I Will Never Forget
In the past three years, there have been many colorful activities in our school. I will never forget the sports meeting that I took part in last term.
It was a sunny day. We gathered on the playground. All of us were happy and excited. I joined in the 400-metre race. At first, I was very nervous because I was worried about the result. However, when I heard the excited cheers from my classmates, I felt I was full of energy and completed the race successfully.
Another activity that impressed me most was the badminton competition in Grade 8. Before my best friend entered the final, we practised hard together every day. At last, she finished fourth. Both of us thought it was meaningful for friends to help each other.
